Wilderness Usawa Serengeti, Tanzania
Wilderness Usawa
Wilderness Usawa Serengeti, part of the Wilderness Safaris family, redefines luxury mobile safari experiences in Tanzania.
Opened in July 2023, the camp earns its name from the Swahili word usawa, meaning “balance”—a fitting ethos that blends effortless comfort with a profound connection to the Serengeti wilderness . Immersed in the remote, quieter corners of the Serengeti, Usawa moves with the Great Migration across nine strategic sites, offering an exclusive vantage on the unfolding drama of wildebeest, zebra, and predator dynamics—while keeping guests far from the crowds
The camp accommodates just 12 guests in six bespoke luxury safari tents, each en‑suite and fusible with the surrounding landscape. Designed for maximum immersion, the tents feature 360° mesh walls, allowing panoramic views and natural ventilation, while offering king‑size beds dressed in fine linens, solar‑powered lighting, hot water showers, Wi‑Fi, and charging stations. A joined‑tents family unit is available for up to five guests, making Usawa suitable for families with children over six, provided the camp is booked for exclusive use. Décor highlights locally sourced artisan pieces—from woven baskets and textiles empowering women’s cooperatives, to chandelier lighting crafted to support local makers—creating a setting both luxurious and socially mindful.
Usawa’s dining is an elegant yet grounded affair—designed around fresh, locally sourced Tanzanian ingredients in gourmet menus that blend international flair with traditional Swahili touches, including fragrant pilau rice, spicy curries, and creamy mtori soup. Meals are all‑inclusive, and dining settings vary from the main mess tent to al fresco bush lunches on the Serengeti plains, or intimate dinners beneath the stars after sundowners at the fire pit. Tailored timings accommodate pre‑safari breakfasts and sundowner interludes, with eco‑conscious practices—like kitchen waste reduction and community sourcing—built into the culinary experience.
At its heart, Usawa offers active immersion in the Serengeti ecosystem: guests can choose early‑morning or late‑afternoon game drives, all‑day excursions with picnic lunches, and walking safaris that depart directly from camp into designated wilderness zones, under guidance from expert Wilderness guides. Birdwatching is exceptional—Serengeti is home to over 500 bird species—while stargazing sessions around the fire pit offer calm contemplation under expansive skies. Optional experiences, like hot‑air balloon rides (weather permitting), offer aerial views of the migration for an unforgettable extra cost. Though fully mobile, the camp retains thoughtful amenities—a central dining and bar area, sun lounges or hammocks, a library or spotting scope, solar‑powered lighting, laundry service, and charging points—all combining comfort and minimal ecological impact.
