HAMILTON, BERMUDA

A charming stack of pastel-coloured buildings clamour over the waterfront of Bermuda's pretty capital, Hamilton. Light paints bathe the island's buildings in bright floral colours, and whether you want to swing your shoulders on lush green fairways, or your hips during lively street parties - Hamilton has a rhythm for everyone.  Dive offshore into teeming reefs, take glass-bottom boats, or stroll on the powder as dazzling sunset displays unfurl. Take in the palatial mansions of Billionaire's Row, or whack golfballs into the crisp blue sky, as the sea washes beside you. Or the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute offers a deep dive into the area's history - exploring everything from mankind's environmental impact, to the Bermuda Triangle's legendary, ship-swallowing mythology.

ST GEORGE'S, BERMUDA

The settlement of Bermuda began in what is now the town of St. George's when the Sea Venture-flagship of an English fleet carrying supplies to Jamestown, Virginia-was wrecked on Bermuda's treacherous reefs in 1609. Although St. George's is a living community-not a living-history museum-it retains the patina of authenticity. In fact, in 2000 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That designation puts it on a par with spots like the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal in India. But don't expect awe-inspiring edifices here. On the contrary, St. George's chief charm lies in tiny walled cottages, simple colonial churches, and labyrinthine alleys that beg to be explored.

4th November

GUSTAVIA, SAINT BARTHELEMY

Cherry red roofs, yacht-sprinkled bays and a sophisticated French flavour all add to the gorgeous Caribbean allure of Gustavia. The island's capital rolls around a horseshoe-shaped harbour, where gleaming yachts hover and fancy boutiques, bars and restaurants fizz with life and clinking cutlery. Head up to red and white Gustavia Lighthouse to look down over the revered waters, which attract many a celebrity guest and diving enthusiast to these shores.

6th November

Willemstad, Curaçao

The capital of the Carribean island Curacao, Willemstad is famous for its technicolour UNESCO World Heritage Site city centre, and a narrow channel connects the sea with the Schottegat harbour, which expands inland like a blooming flower. Visit the small boats that pull up side by side to sell juicy fruits and vegetables, in a floating market on the waters below. At sunset, the gingerbread stretch bathes in lights, glowing evocatively as the last of the evening's light ebbs away.

7th November

Oranjestad, Aruba

Stroll multi-coloured Oranjestad - the capital of enchanting Aruba - and feel the sun’s bronzing kiss, on the shores of one of the sunniest islands in the Caribbean. Settle in for a day on the beach, to relish the stunning weather on some of the region's finest shores - where white sands glow, gentle waves sparkle, and knotted divi divi trees lean. Offering sensational diving and snorkelling, you can swim in the shallow, warm waters, or head out on a catamaran or submarine to investigate further and deeper. If you can drag yourself away from the sparkling beaches and glowing turquoise waters, venture inland towards Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, which lie on the route to Aruba Natural Bridge. Pick out bargains from the fancy shops of the colourful boutique-lined streets, or choose from local makers selling hand-crafted wares.

Port Royal, Kingston Jamaica

Scarcely imaginable nowadays, this humble port close to Kingston has an extraordinary secret past as the sin city of choice for swashbuckling pirates. Spooling out into Kingston Harbour, Port Royal was once the Caribbean’s largest city and an infamous and unhinged hotbed of debauchery. Coral reefs and marine life, like lobsters and lionfish, share the inviting Caribbean waters with lost wrecks and vestiges from the past. Visit Port Royal to see the cannons pointing out from the redbrick walls of Fort Charles, where you can hear stories of the pirates and privateers, and learn of wider Jamaican history.
